The Public Service Association understands staff entering in the Mobility Pathway program are being told to look for part-time jobs rather than expect public sector agencies to accommodate flexible work arrangements.

The advice is particularly galling given the Government has actively promoted its commitment to flexible work practices under the slogan “if not, why not”.

Working parents, carers and injured employees are likely to be the worst affected by the sector’s apparent “head-in-the-sand” approach, and the PSA has urged NSW Treasury to do more to ensure the agencies deliver on the Government’s flexible work agenda.

The Mobility Pathway program has the potential to enhance employment opportunities for potentially excess staff and deliver good outcomes, by transferring talent, experience, skills and knowledge throughout the sector.

Unfortunately, we appear to be seeing the same old prejudice against flexible work arrangements.

Agency heads and hiring managers need to be brought into 21st century and reminded of their role in fostering “a diverse and flexible workforce across the government sector.”
