The PSA wishes a Merry Christmas to all members at the Powerhouse, Sydney Observatory and Castle Hill. We understand that 2016 has been a challenging year for you as management and the NSW government have continued to undermine staff. Yet it is with the spirit of unity, community and hope that we say goodbye to 2016 and look forward to a brighter 2017.
Your leave provisions are important. You cannot be forced to take leave on days which are not public holidays and public service holidays. This year, the holiday dates are the 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th of December and the 1st and 2nd of January 2017. The NSW Government encourages but does not require all non-frontline worksites to shut down over the Christmas to New Year period. You can only be directed to take leave during the Christmas closedown if you have an excess leave balance.

After some setbacks, the PSA has been making a concerted effort to fight for your rights. We have launched a case in the Industrial Relations Commission to get VSOs paid at the correct Clerk 1/2 Grade, fought for shift workers to get holiday pay and grown our membership base significantly. However, this is just the start. The Powerhouse faces a historical challenge, and your union, the PSA, wants to hear what you have to say about the proposed location change and then, as a collective, work together to get the best result for you, the arts and the culture of NSW.
In 2017, the PSA will be a presence and a force at the Powerhouse. We are providing members with a wide variety of training opportunities and bringing in a team structure at the PSA that will give you the industrial and campaigning support which you deserve. We intend for this new structure to provide the bedrock from which to expand and empower the union in your workplace.
But the core of our power as a union will always be you. Through supporting each other and standing together, you can make a real difference to the people around you. We look forward to working with you in 2017.
If you have any questions or need the support of your union, please speak to your local PSA delegate or contact the PSA’s Member Support Centre on 1300 772 679.
