Tragic Incident
Dear PSA Members
Late Friday afternoon there was a shooting at NSW Police Headquarters where long serving public servant Curtis Cheng was killed. This is the second time in the last 18 months that a public servant has been shot and killed whilst serving the people of NSW.
I extend to the family and friends of Mr Cheng my sincerest sympathies. I also want to say to Mr Cheng’s colleagues that the PSA is here for you at this extremely difficult time. We have been working closely with the NSW Police Command and Police Association to ensure your safety and the safety of others who work in Police premises. We will be meeting with members who work for Police this week to hear concerns that you may have about your safety or well being and then we will be raising them in a meeting with the Police Commissioner.
It is with pride that I note that the Special Constables who averted a greater loss of life are covered by the PSA. The Acting General Secretary Steve Turner and PSA Special Constable delegate Marin Jurcevic were in attendance to support our members quickly after this tragic event occurred. Once a critical Incident Investigation was declared, immediate legal and practical support for our members was very important and this was provided by the PSA. The PSA will be working with Special Constables to hear matters of concern that you may have and these will be raised with the Police Commissioner. From all your fellow PSA members we say thank you.
Details are below for those who may wish to provide a donation as a way of expressing sympathy to Mr Cheng’s family.
Finally, I would like to echo the words of Premier Baird who has said that we are an inclusive and tolerant society and that no one can take that from us.
Vale Curtis Cheng.
