Enough is enough: NSW public service workers vote for ongoing action against cuts to jobs and conditions

Monday, 8 October 2012

NSW public service workers have this morning endorsed ongoing political and industrial action against the relentless cuts to jobs, work rights and services across NSW by the O’Farrell Government.

At Sydney Town Hall and more than 46 locations across NSW, Public Service Association of NSW members endorsed a resolution calling on the NSW
Government to:

  • withdraw its application for a new and diminished Crown Employees Conditions Award in the NSW Industrial Relations Commission;
  • halt job cuts in the NSW public sector;
  • restore the “no forced redundancies” policy;
  • restore the power of the NSW Industrial Relations Commission to award fair wage rises without the artificial imposition of a 2.5% wage cap; and
  • repeal the most recent Workers Compensation legislation which cuts benefits to injured workers.

PSA General Secretary John Cahill said many thousands of public service workers feel they have no choice but to take a stand against the massive cuts to the public service to protect jobs and services for the community.

“It is a time of great uncertainty for tens of thousands of workers in NSW, with job losses hitting families and many rural communities hard and colleagues left behind suffering under greater workloads and job insecurity,” Mr Cahill said today.

“The NSW Government’s slash and burn of public sector jobs is not only a personal tragedy for many workers, it will have a deep, long-term impact on the quality of services across our state.

“There are thousands of vital roles, both direct service delivery and support roles which are helping to provide essential public services to the people of NSW every day.

“Public services are a team effort – you can’t expect that if you don’t cut nurses, teachers and police but cut everywhere else that services will continue as normal.

“Public service workers are not just fighting for their jobs, they’re fighting for the jobs and public services of the future.

“Our members will not have anything if they don’t have good, secure jobs and our community will be much poorer without their hard work and the essential services they provide,” Mr Cahill said.
