NSW government cannot deliver on election promise of quality frontline services while axing permanent, full-time staff

The significant service delivery problems at NSW motor registries created by job cuts and insufficient full-time frontline staff highlights the significant problems created by the axing of jobs across the whole public service, according to the Public Service Association of NSW.

Assistant Secretary Steve Turner said it was impossible for the NSW government to deliver on its election promise of improved services for the community, when it was axing up frontline staff in a bid to slash department budgets by up to 25%.

“The axing of permanent, full-time motor registry positions is already creating chaos for the frontline services used by nearly every person in the state, from drivers licences and registrations to essential services for regulation truck drivers and other heavy vehicle users,” Mr Turner said.

“The RTA has failed to employ the appropriate number of full-time employees for frontline roles, with full time positions not being replaced or fully replaced, and additional work burdens falling on existing staff.

“You can only imagine what will happen as similar sorts of cuts roll out across the entire public service, severely impacting on the day-to-day support and services we all need in NSW.

“If the NSW government was sincere about improving public services for the long term prosperity of NSW, it would be creating additional jobs in frontline services, not embarking on a slash and burn of jobs.

“In the lead-up to the State Budget in June, the Public Service Association of NSW is calling on the NSW government to improve public services by guaranteeing existing frontline jobs, and providing more permanent, full-time positions in the areas of greatest need such as our motor registries,” Mr Turner said.
