PSA back in the IRC over Corrective Services Industrial Action

PSA back in the IRC over Corrective Services Industrial Action – April 2018 (PDF version)

Following last week’s industrial action, the PSA was back in the Industrial Relations Commission (IRC) on Monday, 16 April 2018.

We again raised your safety concerns that Corrective Services is not telling its own staff how it comes up with its benchmarked figures. We asked for the Macksam Report again, but Corrective Services again refused to provide it, stating it was no longer relevant. How can the document used as the basis of cutting jobs across the state not be relevant? We also asked for the ‘moderated’ figures which Corrective Services says replaced the Macksam Report. Again, these were not provided.

We have asked IRC Commissioner Murphy to conduct a series of site visits to correctional centres so he can see and understand the conditions members face with the job cuts under benchmarking.

Commissioner Murphy has agreed and the first two centre visits are:

  • Wednesday, 16 May 2018 – South Coast
  • Friday, 18 May 2018 – Long Bay complex

We will let members know as other visits are arranged.

On Wednesday, 18 April 2018 PSA WHS Manager Shay Deguara will be at Long Bay to discuss WHS and benchmarking with the branches to assist them in their ongoing efforts to show Corrective Services that the benchmarked figures are unsafe. If we don’t participate in benchmarking discussions, we run the risk of Commissioner Murphy cancelling his visits. Corrective Services will provide a Long Bay benchmarking timetable which we will review with delegates.

We have also asked for the return of regular meetings with Commissioner Severin – once a year is clearly not enough when jobs are being cut and safety compromised across the state.

If you have any questions please contact your COVB, POVB or NCDC delegate in the first instance.
