Aboriginal Affairs: Upcoming Joint Consultative Committee

Your union will be meeting with your employer on Thursday of this week, 20 October 2022, for the first Joint Consultative Committee meeting of the year. Members Ida Ioannou-Marsh and Ross Bennett will be in attendance along with industrial staff from the PSA.

It is disappointing that it has taken so long to get this meeting up and running but now that it is occurring we expect it to be the first of many opportunities to raise your concerns.

Agenda items will focus on:

JOB SECURITY

Issue:

  • Too many temp contracts
  • Labour hire
  • Need career path options
  • Six-month contracts not good for wellbeing or for Aboriginal Affairs.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

 Issues:

  • Workplace injury – psychosocial injury
  • Vicarious trauma
  • Lack of cultural safety protocol
  • Mismanagement of trauma informed principles, such as suicide briefing note in training example
  • No recognition of impact on Aboriginal staff when senior Aboriginal staff are dismissed
  • People matters surveys, including communications issues, workload concerns and bullying
  • Staff taking significant periods of leave due to stress at work but unwilling to engage with Grievance process to resolve issues due to lack of faith in process.

CONSULTATION PROCESS ON MAJOR CHANGE

Issues:

  • Lack of consultation
  • No transparency
  • Leads to anxiety
  • Consultation had no follow up or guidelines. No timeline.
  • Vague with no detail.

We will report back to you after the meeting.
