PSA stop-work notice: Youth Justice Workers set to take action over ongoing payroll issues

PSA stop-work notice: Youth Justice Workers set to take action over ongoing payroll issues

The PSA’s peak Youth Justice Departmental Committee has unanimously resolved to commence a campaign of industrial action in response to the agency’s refusal to fix a payroll system that routinely leaves Youth Justice staff out of pocket.

The Committee’s decision has not been taken lightly and comes after many months of continued pay concerns being brought forward by the membership.

Youth Justice staff have a right to be paid on time and correctly. We are not prepared to accept a second-rate system any longer and we are sick of talking about it.

It’s time to act. It’s time to act!

Details

All members of the PSA on shift at Acmena, Riverina, Cobham and Frank Baxter Youth Justice centres are directed to attend a stop-work meeting:

Date Wednesday 27 August 2025
Time
1:00pm-3:00pm

The above timeslot has been chosen so that only an hour of industrial action is taken by each line across the shift changeover.

Members at other centres are encouraged to continue looking out for communications from the PSA in the event this action is expanded.

Only members of the PSA are protected in taking Industrial Action by Clause 64 of the Crown Employees (Public Service Conditions of Employment) Award 2009, which states that “There will be no victimisation of staff members prior to, during or following industrial action”.

For further information please talk to your workplace delegate. Alternatively you can contact your Industrial Officer, Ben James, on 1800 772 679.

PSA update: Transport for NSW job cuts dispute and letter to your MP

PSA update: Transport for NSW job cuts dispute and letter to your MP

As reported earlier this week, the relevant unions have a dispute with Transport for NSW (TfNSW) regarding consultation on its proposal to cut up to 950 positions.

As a result of discussions this week, TfNSW has proposed some amendments to the consultation schedule, which extends the timeframes for some consultation processes. It seeks to minimise concurrent consultation timeframes, to ensure members have their Award-protected right to be given reasonable time to provide input and discuss the proposed changes with your union.

While these changes are being considered by the unions, the dispute has not yet been resolved. There are also several other matters the unions are seeking consultation on, including, but not limited to:

  • Detail on the number of Labour Hire employee, including where they are being utilised, and why there are still more than 700 Labour Hire resources being used whilst TfNSW plans to cut 950 jobs.
  • Detail on natural attrition rates and current advertising of roles. If TfNSW was prepared to cut 200 TSSEs via natural attrition over two years, why don’t it apply the same approach to less generously remunerated workers?
  • Detail on when the “planned” cutting of 100 more Transport Senior Service Executives will occur, and why they are being kept on the books whilst cutting less generously remunerated workers in order to make savings.
  • More information on the “savings” required and whether recently discovered fraud contributed to the stated “funding shortfall”. What other options have been considered as an alternative to cutting jobs?

Further discussions next week

While the dispute remains open, as these issues have not been resolved, continued discussions will occur next week.

The campaign continues: Send a letter to your local MP

The PSA has drafted a template letter that members may wish to send to their elected Member of Parliament. The letter asks whether they support the plan to cut 950 TfNSW workers, whilst continuing the protection racket for more than 1000 Senior Executives in Transport. You can visit the below link, which will allow you to view the template letter, amend as you see fit, and automatically send to your elected Member of Parliament.
