Births Deaths and Marriages (BDM) – SICK LEAVE – March 2020

Births Deaths and Marriages - Sick Leave - March 2020 (pdf version)

The PSA understands that there may be Supervisors at BDM who do not understand how sick leave should be applied.

Yes, cosmetic and other non-urgent appointments, like annual/routine check-ups, are able to be attended outside of work hours. But if you need an operation, are under treatment by a specialist, or required to attend allied health professionals for rehabilitation, you are entitled to take sick leave.

The pertinent clause from your Award is copied below.

  1. Sick Leave

79.1 Illness in this clause and in clauses 80 and 81 of this award means physical or psychological illness or injury, medical treatment and the period of recovery or rehabilitation from an illness or injury.

It is a concern how such a simple statement is readily misconstrued. The PSA has heard of this type of heavy-handedness around denial of sick leave at other agencies too. Members, be vigilant. The easiest way to deal with this is apply for sick leave as normal (keep an email trail of any correspondence or discussion about it) and if it is denied contact the PSA Member Support Centre.
