CPSU NSW update: standing strong for integrity and accountability

CPSU NSW update: standing strong for integrity and accountability

  13 May 2026

Your union is aware of media reports yesderday that the New South Wales Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has launched an investigation into alleged corrupt conduct at the University of Wollongong.

We acknowledge and commend former CPSU delegate Lisa Simmons, who consistently stood up for members and challenged the alleged misconduct she witnessed during her time at the University. Lisa showed courage and integrity in speaking out, including giving evidence to the NSW Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Issues Inquiry into the New South Wales university sector.

With the full support of CPSU Industrial Manager Siobhan Callinan and CPSU Industrial Officer Mike Galvez, Lisa provided critical evidence to the inquiry in December 2025 at Parliament House. This was not an easy task, but it was a vital one.

We are proud to have stood behind our committed and brave delegate.

The CPSU has been sounding the alarm about serious issues at the University of Wollongong over the last two years, calling for transparency, proper governance, and compliance with the institution’s establishing legislation. The commencement of an ICAC investigation, alongside the parliamentary inquiry’s specific recommendations relating to UoW, demonstrates exactly why your union’s advocacy matters.

This outcome is a direct result of the determination and collective strength of members and delegates who refuse to turn a blind eye to wrongdoing. Without their daily hard work, commitment, and willingness to hold those in positions of power to account, these issues may never have been exposed.

The CPSU NSW will continue to stand with you, back our delegates, and fight relentlessly for integrity, accountability, and the rights and interests of members.
