Establishment of a National Corrections Service Medal

Establishment of a National Corrections Service Medal

  14 May 2026

Retired NSW Corrections Officer and Prison Officer Vocational Branch (POVB) member Peter Thomson has created a submission for the establishment of a National Corrections Service Medal that formally and consistently recognises the contributions of Australian Corrections Officers across all jurisdictions. This medal is different to the Australian Corrections Medal and would be awarded to all Corrections Officers who have provided 15 years of ethical and diligent service.

The medal will symbolise the respect, appreciation, and gratitude of the Australian people for the tireless work undertaken by these officers to support community safety and offender rehabilitation.

Mr Thomson has been advocating tirelessly for the creation of this medal, seeking support from the unions representing Corrections Officers around the country, and the Corrective Service Ministers in every state. The Public Service Association and POVB support the establishment of this honour for Corrections Officers, whose contributions and sacrifices often go unnoticed and unrecognised.

To show your support for this submission, you can sign the change.org petition, which can be found HERE. The more people who show support, the more chance that the Australian Government will establish this medal.
