Stop the cuts: Western Sydney government workers are worried about the O’Farrell government’s job cuts.

More than 150 Western Sydney government workers met in Parramatta yesterday to discuss job cuts and loss of services in the region.

The Public Service Association of NSW held three meetings (two at Parramatta Town Hall and one at Unions NSW Parramatta) to brief local workers on the the job cuts announced in the last three State budgets.

The impact of the new Government Sector Employment Act, as well as the government’s wages policy and its impact on salaries and superannuation was also discussed.

According to new modelling from the Public Service Association that shows where the O’Farrell Government’s 15,000 job cuts will fall, 538 people in Parramatta will lose their jobs.

And up to 2,306 public service jobs in Western Sydney are at risk including those in the Industrial Relations NSW, Attorney General and Justice and NSW Department of Education & Communities departments.

Earlier this week, staff at Public Passenger Services in Parramatta, who help provide and regulate public passenger services, were told about a proposed cut of 12 positions.

The cuts may affect the agency’s ability to conduct vital services such as background checks and medical assessments of taxi and hire car drivers.

The Public Service Association’s acting general secretary Steve Turner said local MPs should not accept the job cuts and loss of services that are rolling out in their electorates.

“These cuts are going to have long-term consequences on communities and local economies, particularly in regional NSW where the impact of job losses is often felt hardest,’’ Mr Turner said.

“MPs need to come clean on the cuts or take the fight to Macquarie Street to save those jobs,” he said.
