Hunter Local Campaign Action group meets with Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp - Public Service Association

Hunter Local Campaign Action group meets with Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp

On 25 October a PSA/CPSU NSW delegation met with the Member of Parliament for the seat of Newcastle, Tim Crakanthorp.

In the meeting we discussed the effect that the unfair NSW Public Sector salary cap is having on members in our region, as well as the impact of the Industrial Relations (Dispute Orders) Bill 2022 that is before the NSW Parliament. We also discussed the hurtful impact of privatisation; the unfairness of temporary and contracted staffing in all agencies, especially schools; the transition of disability services from state awards; and the lack of staffing resourcing in the Hunter, which is one of the largest growth areas in the state.

From left: Paul O’Shea (PSA Sheriff’s Delegate), Gino DiCandilo (Regional Organiser), Stephen O’Brien (CPSU TAFE Delegate), Tim Crakanthorp, Paul James (Regional Organiser) and Jo-Anne Allen (PSA Delegate Housing NSW).

When asked, Mr Crakanthorp confirmed he is committed to the removal of the Public Sector wages cap, as well as his opposition to the Industrial Relations (Dispute) Bill 2022.  He was incredibly supportive of the work that PSA/CPSU NSW members do within our region and spoke of his PSA membership and family members who work in the Public Sector. We spoke of the chronic workloads in our region, under-resourcing and high turn over of staff.

Mr Crakanthorp committed to following up the under-resourcing in our region and permanency for School Administrative Staff and Student Learning Support Officers. He also gave a commitment to meet with a PSA/CPSU NSW delegation every six months. It was encouraging to know that PSA/CPSU NSW members in the Newcastle area have such a supportive local member.

Other meetings with MPs in the Central Coast, Lake Macquarie, Hunter and Newcastle areas are planned. If you would like to participate come to our next meeting or contact Gino DiCandilo or Paul James. Contact details can be found below.
