Juvenile Justice back in IRC – April 2018 (PDF version)

On Tuesday, 17 April 2018, the PSA re-appeared before Chief Commissioner Kite at the Industrial Relations Commission of NSW. As outlined in our Bulletin dated 13 April 2018, the key concerns remain:

  • flexible accommodation
  • clear consistent penalties for detainee behaviour management
  • what and how debriefs are used.

The PSA stated that the internal communication, as sent by Juvenile Justice on 13 April 2018, implied that agreement had been reached; this is not the case. Each of these matters remain of vital importance to our members’ safety. To move forward the PSA will continue to meet and there are meetings scheduled for 19 and 23 April 2018. However, using the observations of the Industrial Relations Commission, the Department must support staff in understanding how and why decisions have been reached against detainees and staff must be able to approach management to understand these decisions.

The PSA remains committed on the need for:

  • flexible accommodation
  • clear consistent penalties for detainee behaviour management
  • what and how debriefs are used.
