Mandatory Vaccination for School Staff - Public Service Association

Mandatory Vaccination for School Staff

There have been a number of announcements over the last week about vaccinations including the requirement for all school staff to be fully vaccinated by 8 November 2021.

Mandatory covid vaccination for school staff was announced by the Premier last week.  The Public Health Order, making this law, will soon be published.

The PSA cannot provide health advice to members and recommends everyone seek the advice of your doctor or a qualified health care professional about the vaccine and your individual circumstances.

PSA Calls for Genuine Consultation before Implementation

Following the Premier’s announcement of her intention to make mandatory vaccination law, the PSA raised the need for consultation directly with senior Department representatives.  There was no consultation prior to the announcement around how these legal requirements will be implemented, what additional support is available or information on how the Government will prioritise access for school staff to be vaccinated.

The PSA has sought immediate and genuine consultation prior to implementation on how the Department of Education will put this law into practice including:

  1. What process will be in place for those that are unable to access vaccination, particularly in the LGAs of concern and remote and rural communities
  2. How they are supporting school staff to be prioritised for vaccination
  3. What process and additional safety measures will be put in place for those with medical contraindication

The PSA will report back to members on the consultation as it progresses.

Many PSA members are already required to be vaccinated as a condition of their employment and vaccinations for a range of different diseases are mandatory in various industries nation-wide.  We understand that this can be a confusing, difficult and concerning time for members and want to reassure you that we are fighting for genuine consultation on the implementation of mandatory vaccinations.

Raising Your Concerns with the Department

As your employer the Department of Education has a responsibility to provide you clear advice about your employment.  The PSA has sought a central point for school staff to be able to raise their concerns with their employer.
