North Coast Action Group: Feedback from Member of Coffs Harbour Meeting
In December PSA CPSU NSW Delegation met with the Member of Parliament for the seat of Coffs Harbour, the Hon Gurmesh Singh to discuss the effect of the unfair NSW Public Sector wages cap is having on workers in our region. The delegation was Maxine Dayhew from Community Services, Scott King from Environment Protection Agency and Daniel Gibson from Rural Fire Service.
The delegation explained to Mr. Singh that members are buckling under these unfair laws as the cost of living is increasing and its harder to employ and retain staff as they can now be paid higher rates in the private sector. Members discussed staff shortages due to impact of COVID and efficiency dividends.
When asked about the wages cap Mr. Singh said he would support a yearly review of the wages cap but would not commit to removing the wages cap or voting for its removal if legislation was presented to Parliament. We would like to remind members that Mr. Singh voted for the wages cap when it was originally presented to parliament and has done nothing to remove it, allowing your wages to fall behind to inflation.
In February PSA/CPSU met with Councilor Tony Judge who is the Labor Candidate for Coffs Harbour.
Mr. Judge was a CPSU union member for 27 years and is 100% behind the PSA’s campaign to remove the wages cap, end further privatisation in NSW and decrease the amount of insecure work in the NSW Public Service.
In the lead up to the NSW election to be held on 25 March, the PSA is campaigning for the overturning of the NSW Government’s wages policy, putting an end to privatisation of the NSW Public Sector and for greater job security for NSW Public Sector workers.
