Pillar bulletin – privatisation
Pillar bulletin – privatisation – 11 January 2016 (PDF version)
As members are aware, the NSW Government has announced its intention to privatise Pillar.
The PSA met with Pillar management prior to Christmas.
We expressed our obvious opposition to the proposed sale.
Pillar stated that the NSW Government are going ahead with the sale but confirmed that new legislation would be required.
Management stated that an advisor would be appointed in January to devise a sales strategy.
The advisor would report in February.
The timetable after February in unclear. NSW Parliament does not sit again until March.
Management stated their commitment to the business remaining in Wollongong.
When pressed on how this could be guaranteed with a private operator in charge, management were unable to answer.
They indicated this would be determined by the sales strategy.
Management were prepared to have ongoing discussions regarding stability in the workforce and conditions of employment.
The PSA and South Coast Labour Council have been in the media campaigning against the sale.
We will now escalate this campaign and will make representations to members of Parliament.
The PSA will also continue to fight to protect conditions of employment, regardless of whether Pillar is privatised or not.
We will further discuss the proposed sale and the fight to protect working conditions at our members’ meeting at 12 midday on 13 January at Coniston.
Further details to be advised.
