Proposed changes to the laws governing the use of firearms

We are aware media have begun reporting on proposed changes to the laws governing the use of firearms by Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) Correctional Officers.

The New South Wales Government has contacted both the PSA and CSNSW for comment and feedback on proposed changes to the Crimes (Administration of Sentences) Regulation 2014 (CAS Regulation), most importantly to clause 303.

The NSW Government is not required to provide draft legislation to the PSA and POVB but has chosen to do so because it is aware of the effect this can have on our members and the broader public.

The PSA has advised it does not agree with the current draft clause 303 of the CAS Regulation and has asked for further consultation, including with its membership. These changes from the NSW Government are, at this stage, proposals. However, if we are advised that NSW Government draft clause 303 is to go ahead in the current form, the POVB will take Statewide Industrial Action.

Regards,
Keith Smith
POVB Chairperson
