School Learning Support Officer (SLSO) Healthcare Procedures, PSA Update

The PSA has recently received feedback from members attending re-certification training around the Healthcare Procedures. There has been no change in the PSA position with the Health Care Procedures. In response to members’ feedback the PSA provides the following advice:

1. Suctioning

No SLSO should undertake any deep suctioning – only shallow suctioning can be undertaken after seeking special consideration with approval by the Department.

2. Catheters

No SLSO should undertake to insert any catheters. The only agreed procedure is that an SLSO may assist the student to self-catheter through the provision of equipment and support.

SLSO’s are reminded that they cannot be directed to undertake Heath Care Procedures, all duties in relation to this are voluntary. If SLSO’s choose to volunteer then the appropriate training and allowance is payable.

If you have any issue in relation to this advice you can contact the PSA on 1300 772 679 or by email
