Student Support Officers update - Public Service Association

Student Support Officers update

PSA members are reminded that your Role Description outlines the purpose, duties and responsibilities of being an SSO. You should familiarise yourself with it and work within its scope.

The PSA has received enquiries from members about the below duties.

Home visits

Members are advised that Student Support Officers (SSOs) should under no circumstances perform or be directed to perform “home visits”, as this duty is not part of your Role Description.

The Department of Education has specific employment classifications who are trained and authorised to carry out home visits. Home visits occur when all other avenues of communication have been unsuccessful and under strict conditions, including background/location checks by NSW Police.

Transportation of students

Members are advised that SSOs should under no circumstances transport students in private vehicles or an employer-provided vehicle. Members cannot be directed to perform this either, as it is not part of your Role Description.

Need assistance at work?

If you require assistance or advice with the above issues or any other workplace matter you can contact the PSA Member Support Centre on 1800 772 679, Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm.

Do you know someone who still needs to join the PSA?

Encourage your SSO colleagues to join the PSA online at psa.asn.au/join to add to the union’s strength so that we can continue to advance and protect your interests.
