What will you do for SAS Staff Recognition Week 2017?

Each year the PSA invites schools to recognise and acknowledge the important work our School Administrative and Support Staff undertake in schools across NSW.

Whether you work in the office, library, classroom or school grounds the PSA knows the work you do is vital to education.

Recognition Week packages have now been posted and should have arrived or be arriving in schools shortly.

Included in the package is a Recognition Week poster which you can also download HERE.

Recognition Week is an opportunity for your Principal, and the school community, to show their appreciation to:

• Aboriginal Education Officers

• General Assistants

• Administrative Officers

• School Learning Support Officers

• Administrative Managers.

Full house at PSA CPSU NSW fringe event

The PSA CPSU NSW organised a fringe event at NSW Labor conference this year to talk about the shameful privatisation of ADHC, and engage the state opposition and their members in discussion.

The event was well-attended, with standing room only. Party members, delegates from other unions and our own PSA CPSU NSW delegates engaged the speakers in a meaningful dialogue on the effects of the privatisation, and the next steps forward.

Our own CPSU NSW delegate, Rachel Smoothy, did a fantastic job chairing the event and made sure our union’s voice was heard.

Sophie Cotsis MP kicked off the panel by confirming her support for a public safety net for disability services.

Lucille McKenna OAM spoke about her personal experience with her grandson Kenneth in ADHC care, and the importance of keeping up that standard of care in the future.

Associate Professor Damien Cahill confirmed that privatisation is inherently flawed, and presented 10 recurring problems with privatisation. His speaking notes can be found HERE.

To wrap it up, the CEO of Disability Macarthur, Annamaria Wood discussed her experiences as a registered nurse in disability working both in the public and private sectors. She noted that cuts to services in the private sector have already begun, resulting in job losses and loses in experienced staff.

Thank you all for coming, it was a remarkable success for our union. This is a significant step in the right direction, and we will continue to advocate for you.

Although the privatisation is well underway, we will not stop fighting to secure your rights, and hopefully retain a public safety net. Your union is strong, united, and we will not give up!

Dear members,

I would like to invite you and your family to join with us in celebrating May Day this year.

The PSA will be among the many unions proudly marching to mark the day, and I would love to see you there.

May Day is a worldwide celebration of workers’ rights, with unionists taking to the streets to celebrate the labour movement, its values, victories and ongoing struggles.

At a time when workers’ rights are under attack from both the state and federal governments, there has never been a more important time to show your support for Australia’s proud union movement.

We want as many PSA members as possible to come along to marches in Sydney and Wollongong and make a big noise.

This year’s Sydney May Day march will commence 12 midday on Sunday 7 May at Hyde Park North.

ACTU Secretary Sally McManus will be among the speakers at Hyde Park, with comedian Corrine Grant as MC.

Other speakers will include Mark Morey from Unions NSW and Dr John Falzon from St Vincent De Paul.

Following the speeches at Hyde Park, we will walk as one to Prince Alfred Park, where there will be live music, food and entertainment.

For families there will also be free activities and rides for all ages set up at Prince Alfred Park.

We want our kids and grandkids to lead our march under the banner of fighting for a better future for them.

The Wollongong march will take place on 6 May. Marchers should assemble at the South Coast Labour Council headquarters at Lowden Square, opposite Wollongong railway station, at 10am.

The union movement wants to make this year’s May Day the biggest ever seen in history.

The PSA encourages its members to put on a red shirt and join the chorus of voices letting the State Government know the workers united will never be defeated.

May Day March – Wollongong

The Wollongong march will take place on Saturday 6 May. Marchers should assemble at the South Coast Labor Council headquarters at Lowden Square, opposite Wollongong railway station, at 10am.

May Day March – Newcastle

Newcastle’s May Day march will be on Sunday, 30 April. Supporters are to meet at Hamilton train station at 10am for a 10.30am march to Gregson Park via Beaumont Street. At Gregson Park there will be speeches and songs of Solidarity.

Palm Sunday rally for refugees 2017 – Sunday 9 April

Unions NSW Secretary Mark Morey will be among the speakers at Palm Sunday on 9 April. The march, in support of asylum seekers, will begin at the Archibald Fountain and head to Circular Quay.
