Today’s the day! Paid Parental Leave changes come into effect 1 July

Today’s the day Paid Parental Leave changes come into effect 1 July

Paid parental leave entitlements change today.

If you have a baby born or adopted today or any day in the future, you may be eligible for the updated entitlements.

The main points to consider are:

  • ‘Maternity leave’ is now called ‘Paid Parental Leave – Parent with Primary Responsibility for care of child at the time of birth, adoption or surrogacy’. The paid entitlement remains at 14 weeks – this is just a name change!
  • ‘Other parent’ leave is now called ‘Paid Parental Leave – Other Parent’. The paid leave entitlement for ‘Other’ parents increases today from one week at the time of birth to two weeks at the time of birth with an additional 12 weeks available within the first 12 months from birth if you can provide evidence that you are the primary carer for that period.

Further details are provided in this earlier bulletin, or on the Public Service Commission website.

Your internal HR team should now be across the changes, and you may have received departmental communications about the new policy.

If you have any questions or come into any difficulty in applying for your updated entitlement, please call our Member Support Centre on 1300 772 679.
