Transport for NSW update: know your rights!  - Public Service Association

Transport for NSW update: know your rights!

Your union, the Public Service Association (PSA) has been in negotiations with Transport for NSW since July 2025 to protect members through what we can describe as a glorified ‘spill and fill’ process.

Transport initially sought to cut 950 jobs before Christmas.

Because of strong membership and the efforts of your workplace union delegates who led collective action efforts in your workplace, much of the intended and immediate impact has been mitigated.

Your union took Transport into dispute before the Indutrial Relations Commission to challenge the process and ensure the rights of our members were protected.

As a result we have won:

  • Further slash in senior executives to free up Award and TSSM roles.
  • The rushed Workplace Prescence Policy has been delayed and will now be implemented separately after the restructures are done.
  • The Four-Week Internal Gated Process has been negotiated to maximise opportunities for at-grade placement within consultation cohorts before the mobility phase begins.
  • Regular and ongoing negotiations with Transport management continue on all matters affecting our members through this process.

These outcomes were not a given. They were fought for and secured by the PSA.

Next Steps

As the process is drawing to the pointy end, members who are due to or are currently going through the process need to be aware of the following.

During consultation:

  • You are entitled to genuine consultation before decisions are made.
  • You must be provided with the new Org Chart and information about how your role is impacted.
  • You have the right to provide feedback before outcomes are determined.
  • The PSA has and will continue to make collective submissions on behalf of members during the consultation phase.

During the Four-Week Gated Process

  • At-grade placement opportunities must be considered first.
  • If you are unsuccessful, you have the right to request review within seven days of the decision prior to the role being advertised widely.

If going through mobility:

  • Roles offered must be suitable considering your primary location and at grade where possible. This is across the NSW public sector.
  • If declared excess and not placed during eight-week period, then voluntary redundancy can be offered. Continued efforts need to be made to identify suitable roles.
  • No forced redundancy provisions continue to apply for RMS legacy employees. There is no end date for these protections if you are former RMS.

Temporary employees/fixed term:

  • Temporary employees who have been in the same role for over 24 months are entitled under the Award to permanent employment if you are not replacing someone else on extended leave. This is not automatic; you need to apply for permanent appointment with Transport.

We are Stronger Together!

If you know of a colleague who is not yet a union member, forward them this email and encourage them to join. During these uncertain workplace changes it is crucial that we work together as a collective. Only with a strong and growing union membership can we negotiate fairer outcomes at the decision making table.

Only union members have the support and protection of the collective.

The PSA will continue fighting to hold Transport management accountable during these uncertain changes.
