The PSA has written to Premier Chris Minns seeking that a re‑elected Labor Government will commit to long‑overdue reform of the Members of Parliament Staff Act (MoPS Act), a key recommendation of the Broderick Review. The letter can be read HERE. Four years after the Review that exposed widespread bullying, harassment, abuse of power and chronic under‑reporting in parliamentary workplaces, the core structural problem remains unchanged. That is under the MoPS Act, MPs retain sweeping control over staff employment, including termination.
The Commonwealth has already strengthened protections for its parliamentary workforce. NSW must not fall further behind.
The Review made clear that job insecurity under the MoPS Act is a major barrier preventing staff from speaking up. While cultural reforms have begun, the system that enables silence and retaliation persists. Before 2013, staff had stronger protections under the Industrial Relations Act and the Crown Employees (Parliamentary Electorate Officers) Award. The former Coalition Government dismantled these safeguards, leaving NSW with one of the weakest parliamentary employment frameworks in the country.
Save the date: Beyond Broderick Forum
The PSA will host the Beyond Broderick forum in the Macquarie Room, NSW Parliament House on Thursday 6 August 2026 commencing 12:30pm. PSA General Secretary, Stewart Little will be attending, with additional speakers to be confirmed.
The PSA is the only union for Members of Parliament Staff
The PSA is the only union that can represent the interests of Members of Parliament Staff. No other union has jurisdiction, coverage or the years of experience. If you are a member of another union or know someone who is, now is the time to join the PSA. We committed to supporting Members of Parliament Staff across the state and continue to advocate for improved workplace conditions, fair treatment, and industrial protections.
