Department of Customer Service: PSA travelling compensation survey

The PSA is conducting a short, but important survey of members employed by the Department of Customer Service in positions that are classified as field workers. Field workers includes, but is not limited to members employed as; SafeWork Inspectors, Fair Trading Inspectors, Motor Vehicle Repair Industry Inspectors and Independent Liquour and Gaming Inspectors. Additionally, if you are required to regularly travel within a set geographical region as part of your role, you may be a field worker. The link to this survey is HERE.

The PSA is trying to collect accurate data concerning the frequency which field workers are paid allowances for meal expenses under clause 29 of the Crown Employees (Public Service Conditions of Employment) Award. Clause 29 provides the following:

29.1 An employee who is authorised by the Department Head to undertake a one-day journey on official business which does not require the employee to obtain overnight accommodation, shall be paid the appropriate rate of allowance set out in Item 1 – Allowances of Table 1 of Part B Monetary Rates for:

29.1.1 Breakfast when required to commence travel at or before 6.00 a.m. and at least 1 hour before the prescribed starting time;

29.1.2 An evening meal when required to travel until or beyond 6.30 p.m.; and

29.1.3 Lunch when required to travel a total distance on the day of at least 100 kilometres and, as a result, is located at a distance of at least 50 kilometres from the employee’s normal headquarters at the time of taking the normal lunch break.

The PSA previously conducted a survey concerning this same subject in late 2021. We still ask all members to complete this survey even if they completed the previous survey, as the data captured in this survey is more specific than the previous survey.

Participating in this survey is quick and simple, but will be of immense assistance to the PSA. The last question of the survey will prompt you to provide any available evidence you may have that indicates you received an allowance for meal expenses on one-day journeys. This prompt will request that you send that information to . This inbox is for the collection of evidence only in response to the survey. If you have questions about your industrial entitlements or any other issues at work, please contact the Member Support Centre on 1300 772 679 or speak to your Organiser and workplace Delegates.

To participate with this survey please click on the link below – the survey will be open for two weeks and will end at close of business Friday 18 February 2022.
