Service NSW: update on backpay negotiations
Since our last bulletin, your union met with representatives from the Department of Customer Service (DCS) and Service NSW (SNSW) on 18 February 2026 to discuss backpay for current and former SNSW employees arising from the misapplication of the SNSW Award.
During this meeting, DCS/SNSW presented a without prejudice proposed methodology for calculating backpay. PSA representatives are reviewing this proposal, and additional information is expected from DCS/SNSW in the week of 2 March 2026.
Response to delegate questions
DCS/SNSW provided the attached response, which can be viewed HERE, to questions raised by delegates on 10 February 2026.
The PSA does not agree with the response to Question 4 and will be raising this issue further. Our understanding is that SNSW employees have consistently been expected to begin work before their rostered shift to ensure shift readiness. If employees were required to start work early, this time must be compensated under the SNSW Award.
If you have examples or documentation showing that early commencement was expected or required, please contact your workplace delegate, and or PSA Organiser Trina Leask. Providing supporting documentation will strengthen the PSA’s position.
Next Steps
The PSA is committed to securing the best possible outcome for members.
We will not agree to any backpay process without:
- Full consultation with members
- Endorsement from the membership
As negotiations progress, the PSA will continue to engage closely with delegates and the broader membership.
We will be surveying our members and hold Teams meetings shortly. Details will be provided in next week’s bulletin.
Union Power
Remember this win did not happen by accident.
Retired PSA delegate and former Service NSW employee Janice Hartman explains that the union first raised these issues ten years ago.
It is the strength, commitment, and persistence of PSA members that has brought us to the point where backpay is now being negotiated.
Ask a colleague to join the PSA
Now is the time to join the PSA. Joining ensures you have representation, protection, and support to recover unpaid overtime and to hold the employer to account. If you work with someone who is not a member talk to them about what union is doing and explain it is in their interests to join.
