During this term, your Student Support Officer (SSO) Advisory Group met to discuss the on-the-ground issues being experienced across schools. Consistent themes were raised with delegates through SSO networks, and these were reflected in the member meeting held on Tuesday, 2 June 2026.
For those who were able to attend, it was clear that the feedback shared reinforced common concerns in your role. One of the key issues identified was the lack of consistent practices in relation to the duties Student Support Officers undertake. This was particularly evident in discussions around record keeping and expectations for working during school holidays.
SSO recognition of professionalism
SSO record keeping: Record keeping remains a significant concern for Student Support Officers. Current practices largely rely on individual school processes and what is operational at the local level. Members have consistently raised the need for departmental guidance and a consistent system of record keeping that supports ethical practice while ensuring the confidentiality and privacy of students is maintained.
The PSA is continuing to prosecute this issue with the department via our JCC forums, given that the OSCR system functions well for School Psychologists.
SSO Professional Learning: We know that SSOs are professionally qualified, and we’ve heard from members that you wish to maintain your professional development and informed practice, through continuing and relevant Professional Learning (PL).
The PSA continues to raise the provision of targeted Professional learning for SSOs, especially with the opportunities to undertake it in the School Vacation periods and on pupil free days during term.
SSO recruitment: The PSA is in consultation over the SSO Recruitment Procedures and SSO Commencing Salary Procedure.
The union’s constant advocacy for standardised and compliant recruitment processes ensuring proper qualifications has resulted in the department centralising SSO onboarding to corporate recruitment.
School vacation periods: With the school holidays approaching, another inconsistency highlighted by members is that some Student Support Officers are required to complete holiday work plans while others are not. If you are asked to complete a holiday plan the information provided should be a general overview of your planned work rather than a detailed, minute-by-minute schedule.
The vacation period is also an opportunity to undertake PL/training. Remember that you may work remotely during the vacation period, including from a regional office or from home. If you are directed to work onsite a risk assessment must be completed beforehand.
Looking ahead
The SSO Advisory Group remains committed to continuing to engage with members and ensuring Student Support Officers have a strong, collective voice.
Keep an eye out for the Term 3 Member Meeting invitation, and encourage your colleagues to attend, participate, and stay connected through the PSA.
