Welcome General Assistants

The Public Service Association of NSW (PSA) represents 40,000 members, most of them public servants employed by the NSW State Government.

The PSA fights to secure and advance the pay and conditions of all non-teaching staff in NSW public schools, including School Learning Support Officers, School Administrative Officers, Aboriginal Education Officers , School Administrative Managers, Business Managers, General and Farm Assistants, School Psychologists and Student Support Officers.

The PSA has approximately 11,000 members in NSW public schools – our largest contingent amongst a membership of 40,000.

The PSA also represents members working in all NSW government departments, agencies and state-owned corporations, including:

  • Dept of Education (Support Staff & head office)
  • Family and Community Services
  • Justice
  • Health
  • Planning, Industry and Environment
  • Transport
  • Premier and Cabinet
  • Customer Service
  • Finance, Services and Innovations
  • Industry
  • Regional NSW
  • Treasury

The PSA is a major public union that works on behalf of fee-paying members state-wide, helping them in all aspects of their working lives. It provides support, expert advice and collective as well as individual representation with any difficulty that may be encountered in the workplace.

No Government, of any political persuasion, automatically offers to boost workers’ pay packets or conditions, but tens of thousands of PSA members working collectively can achieve significant outcomes, as we have done in the past.

In addition to better pay and conditions, PSA members also receive assistance with a range of other workplace issues including the protection of flexible working hours, bullying, worker’s compensation, disciplinary matters, women’s rights, work practices, and Workplace Health and Safety.

There are a wide range of member benefits that can easily save more than the cost of membership, including:

  • Savings on groceries (Coles, Woolworths, etc), clothing, electronics (The Good Guys, JB Hi-Fi Apple), gym memberships, cheaper electricity and gas bills, home and personal loans and much more.
  • Journey insurance (up to 80% of your salary for 2 years)
  • Accident Insurance
  • Ambulance cover for members and their family
  • Union Shopper discounts
  • Cheaper banking, mortgages, loans and credit cards
  • PSA Provident Fund ($4000)
  • Free will
  • Free Legal Advice
  • Free access to a number of services to support members with personal issues.
  • PSA membership fees are 100% tax deductible

Secure Jobs

Secure Jobs

Without job security, you can’t take out a loan or plan for the future.

Insecure, unreliable jobs are putting too much stress on Australian workers and their families.

Too many causal jobs are replacing permanent positions in our workplaces.

There is a federal election on 21 May. This is our chance to elect a government that will make sure jobs are secure in our workplaces.

We’ve got your back: PSA CPSU NSW Emergency Relief Fund

We’ve got your back: PSA CPSU NSW Emergency Relief Fund

During the devastating bushfires of 2019/2020, the PSA CPSU NSW established a $100,000 relief fund for members badly affected by those bushfires.

Now in March 2022 we are dealing with the catastrophic floods throughout the state.

The PSA CPSU NSW Executive endorsed a permanent Emergency Relief Fund which will give up to $1000 to eligible members whose primary residence was totally or partially destroyed by a declared natural disaster. Applicants need to have been financial members when their home was damaged.

Applications will also be considered for other reimbursements for those affected by the disaster.

To apply for help, go to our website and download the application form, or alternatively contact the PSA CPSU NSW on 1800 772 679 or at .

Applications for funds will be reviewed by a committee consisting of the President, Assistant General Secretary, Senior Vice President and Vice President.

Whether it is job cuts or natural disasters, your union will always be there for the people of NSW.
