Update for PSA members: Proposed Spatial Services restructure

Your employer recently provided a briefing to your union, the PSA, in relation to the proposed changes to roles and duties identified in the Spatial Services restructure.

We were advised Spatial Services does not have sufficient budget to operate and bids to increase it have not been successful.

It is proposed that Information Services will be renamed Spatial Technology. Digital Services will move to the Customer and Emergency Management Services division and processes will be streamlined to increase operational efficiency. Whether the proposed restructure will have this effect remains to be seen.

Spatial Services has identified 28 vacant roles which will be deleted. A further 43 are earmarked to go. However, roughly half of those are temporary projects coming to an end in May or June and thus not included in the scope of this plan.

It is disappointing to note that, as a result of cutting one Senior Executive role last financial year, Spatial Services has no plans to reduce senior roles further.

Under the plan, Spatial Services will reduce, but not remove, field operations. It is still deciding on whether to keep the plane it owns and not renew the contract for the leased plane, or retain the leased plane and sell the one it owns. What this will mean for information gathering and how this will affect stakeholders remains to be determined.

The PSA was also advised that the office in Nowra will be closed, affecting one ongoing and one temporary role. Spatial Services expects to close the Coffs Harbour office in the next four years.

Spatial Services advised it had briefed the Minister in the last week. The PSA is not convinced of the depth of the briefing and will provide our own briefing to the Minister.

At the member meeting on 24 March 2025 we discussed the information sent out in the previous bulletin in relation to the proposed changes to roles in the Spatial Services restructure:

  • Losing 10 ongoing Grade 12 roles
  • Losing 12 ongoing Grade 11 roles
  • Gaining 16 ongoing 11/12 roles and 1 temp
  • Gaining seven ongoing Grade 9/10 roles
  • Losing two ongoing 5/6 roles
  • Gaining four temp 5/6 roles
  • Losing 25 ongoing 3/4 roles
  • Gaining one temp 3/4 role
  • Losing eight ongoing 1/2 roles
  • Keeping three temp 1/2 roles
  • Losing 13 ongoing GSO 1 roles
  • Gaining five temp GSO 1 roles

This information was provided by the Department in the Restructure Management Plan which you can find HERE.

We encourage members to engage in this process by providing feedback to the PSA by close of business 4 April 2025.

You can share your feedback by contacting the PSA Member Support Centre on 1800 772 679 or by emailing referencing case number C10004575.
