Organisational realignment at the Australian Museum

The PSA has received advice that the Australian Museum (AM) Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO)  has emailed the following message to staff in relation to an organisational restructure to be finalised by the end of June 2025.

Director and CEO’s message

Organisational Realignment:

The Australian Museum will be undergoing an organisational realignment that will help it better coordinate efforts to deliver the Corporate Strategic Plan.  The Australian Museum is enhancing its organisational structure to better fulfill its mission and maximise its collective impact.  After consideration of current operations, the proposal intends aligning five departments to leverage complementary strengths and create new opportunities for collaboration.

It is claimed that this realignment represents an evolution of the AM organisational structures to:

  • focus on revenue growth (both self-generated and commercial revenue);
  • better leverage our collective expertise;
  • create more natural alignments between complementary functions;
  • break down the divisional silos that limit effectiveness;
  • elevate our impact as an organisation and a cultural institution.

What’s Changing?

After careful consideration, the following departments will be realigned within the divisional structure:

  • World Cultures & Collections will join the First Nations Division, underscoring the current cultural knowledge approach. (Archives and Library will remain with Museums Experience and Engagement Division);
  • Digital & Web will move into MCP enabling a more streamlined approach to the public engagement and digital content generation enhancing current storytelling capabilities;
  • Education will join the Office of the Chief of Staff to achieve strategic and ambitious education goals with Government and Philanthropy partners;
  • Venues and Retail will become part of Museums Experience and Engagement (MEE) with an enhanced commercial focus, aligning visitor interactions for a more seamless experience.

Implementation Timeline:

The new structure will take effect from 27 June 2025 to align with the NSW Government’s financial year. Affected Managers and their teams will have the opportunity to address specific questions or concerns about departmental workflows and the cross-divisional transition from 1-14 May.
