PSA raises concerns over hours behind the wheel

The PSA was contacted by members who raised concerns that, during the election period, Ministerial Drivers would be expected to extend the maximum amount of hours that may be required of them to 14.

The amount of hours Drivers may be required to work has long been a concern of the PSA and over recent years much discussion occurred with management to improve the situation.

The PSA immediately contacted the department to raise our concerns and stated that if the advice received was correct, we would lodge a dispute in the Industrial Relations Commission (IRC). The PSA believes such an expectation would breach the Work Health and Safety Act.

We were subsequently advised there was no obligation for Drivers to work such hours. We were told some Drivers had expressed that, on regional trips, it was sometimes difficult to restrict hours. On that basis, and in exceptional circumstances, management stated these hours could be worked. Management further stated it would would prefer that an alternative driver be provided.

Further, if there was an expectation that a second 14-hour day was anticipated, an alternative driver would be definitely be provided.

Management has advised it is committed to the maximum being 12 hours and that is its preferred view.

The PSA strongly urges its members to not work beyond 12 hours and to ensure they have proper eight-hour breaks between shifts.

Make no mistake, if the PSA were to hear of a direction for Drivers to work beyond 12 hours we would lodge an urgent application with the IRC. We do not hold the election or work of politicians as more important than our members’ health and safety.

The PSA has sought to meet with management in the next few weeks to open up discussions on various matters. Work Health and Safety will never be off the agenda.
