Leave for members impacted by the floods – Special leave and ‘On Duty’

With numerous regions of NSW experiencing some of the worst flooding in over 100 years the PSA wants to extend our heartfelt thanks to those of you that have pitched in to keep our communities safe during yet another natural disaster, whether that be through the role in which you are employed, volunteering with the SES or RFS, working in evacuation centres and numerous other ways.

We know for many of you your homes and workplaces have been dramatically impacted by the floods. The PSA has launched a permanent Disaster Relief Fund to support our members.

Leave or On Duty – what are my rights?

The PSA reminds all members affected by flooding that:

  1. All staff directly affected by the current flood emergency will be considered as ‘on duty’ and will not be required to take any leave up until Friday 11 March. If you have applied for or taken leave for the period up to 14 March, you can cancel this when you’re able.

Confirmed casual bookings will also be honoured. The casual cancellation policy that is currently in effect as part of the COVID-19 response will be extended to cover flood affected areas. This will be reviewed as schools become operational.  Principals and delegates are asked not to submit unauthorised absences if it is related to the flood emergency.

Refer to Leave framework for responding to emergencies for more information and detailed advice.

AND

  1. From this Monday 14 March the Leave for Emergencies Framework will apply for all staff who are continuing to require leave as a result of the current flooding and recovery effort. As the current severe weather is significantly affecting many departmental staff members across the state, it continues to be considered a significant and coordinated response and therefore the 20 days special leave will be available for staff in circumstances consistent with the eligibility requirements in the framework.

For further information please refer to the Leave for Emergencies Framework including the PDF version which contains flowcharts that detail each scenario.
