Prisoners using drones to smuggle drugs into NSW prisons – 2GB 08/07/2019
The number of prisoners around the nation using drones to smuggle in drugs and mobile phones is on the rise.
The Daily Telegraph reports many of the drones are suspected of running multiple flights into prisons before they are even detected.
There have been almost 70 drones seen flying around NSW prisons in the last five years, with 35 of them seen just last year.
General Secretary of the Public Service Association Stewart Little tells Merrick Watts it’s difficult to prevent mobile use and drones around prisons.
“The last thing you want is contraband getting into those types of places because obviously it exponentially increases the risk inside the jail.
“When you go to jam those signals a lot of our jails are in built-up suburban areas which means if that technology were deployed… it would affect those residents that live nearby.”
