White Ribbon Day

25 November was White Ribbon Day. It was also International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

There will be #16DaysofActivism Against Gender-Based Violence from 25 November to 10 December.

The #WeWontWaitDV campaign is demanding 10 days’ paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave as part of the National Employment Standards.

There is a crisis in Australia.

Every week a woman is killed by an intimate partner or family member. Already in 2017, 44 women have been killed through family or domestic violence. 800,000 women and 1 in 20 men will experience violence at home this year.

To escape a violent relationship you have to take time off work. Without paid leave, people subjected to violence simply don’t have time or resources to find a new, safe, place.

Malcolm Turnbull needs to hear the message loud and clear that Australian workers won’t wait for paid family and domestic violence leave. We can’t win this campaign without your support and involvement.

In your Facebook and Instagram posts and your Tweets, tag Malcolm Turnbull so he notices the groundswell of support for #WeWontWaitDV. Tag Turnbull’s Facebook page, his Instagram and his Twitter.

Tell Malcolm Turnbull that nothing less than a minimum of 10 days paid leave is acceptable.

The Turnbull Government has refused to ensure Australian workers have access to paid domestic and family violence leave, despite evidence that it would save lives and cost business just five cents a day.

So this year, over the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence from 25th November to 10th December, our campaign to enshrine 10 days paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave in the National Employment Standard is escalating – and we need you to be part of it.

Over the 16 days of activism, I ask all of you to head to your social media accounts and unequivocally demand that people subjected to family and domestic violence be guaranteed access to a minimum of 10 days’ paid leave to escape or resolve the violence.
