Celebrating our 90th year: Women’s Council events and webinars
This year we celebrate 90 years of our Womens’ Council. As 2020 comes to an end, we are joining with other unionists to celebrate our wins and look forward to what’s next.
Launch
Unions NSW would like to invite you to the launch of our 16 Days of Action for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the new workplace resource: Working From Home Isn’t Safe When Home Isn’t Safe: How to respond to family & domestic violence in home-based workplaces. Speakers include Karen Willis, CEO Rape and Domestic Violence Centre; and Natalie Lang, Secretary ASU NSW and ACT Branch. You can join the launch on Wednesday 25 November at 11am HERE.
Webinar
Older Women’s Network NSW (OWN NSW) will be hosting a webinar Driving On Roads Is Not Enough: Why We Still Need to Make a Feminist Difference. It will commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and launch the new website of the Edna Ryan Awards that will call for nominations for 2021. You need to register HERE for the webinar.
Film screening: member tickets
As part of our 90th anniversary celebrations, we purchased members’ tickets to the online premiere of Women of Steel, set in Wollongong in1980. Denied jobs at the steelworks – the city’s main employer – working-class and migrant women refused to accept discrimination. They began a campaign for the right to work that lasted for 14 years. Their battle against BHP, the country’s richest and most powerful company, took them from factory gate to the highest court in the land and changed the rules for women throughout Australia. Using rare archival footage and speaking directly to camera, these Women of Steel tell their own stories for the first time on film.
If you missed our first screening, you now have another chance to see the film in person. The PSA CPSU NSW has 20 tickets to give away: 10 to an online screening Thursday 26 November at 7pm and 10 to the in-person screening at George Street Cinema, Sydney, on Monday 7 December at 7pm. Please email to express interest and we will notify members on the afternoon of Wednesday, 25 November if they have won a ticket! This will be done on a first-emails-received basis. Regional members and members with accessibility requirements will be given preference to the online screening.
In solidarity,
