Job cuts announcement – PSA member meetings
The PSA will be holding member meetings over the coming weeks to discuss the announcement from the Transport Secretary, Josh Murray, of a plan to cut 950 positions from TfNSW in order to reach a “savings target” of $600 million dollars.
The number of Senior Executives across Transport continues to dwarf other Departments
The announcement to cut 950 positions from Transport Senior Service Manager (TSSM) and Award staff comes after a 2-year process that has reduced the size of TSSE’s of across Transport by just 200. The PSA notes that while there has been a reduction of approximately 200 from the TSSE ranks, Transport still employs over 1000 Senior Executives, approximately 25% of the entire Government Sector.
It stands to reason that if TfNSW wishes to look for savings, they should continue looking at their Senior Executive numbers, and explain why they need so many for their workforce. They also need to explain why they are comfortable with a 2-year process to cut 200 Senior Executives, but plan to cut 950 workers over the next five months.
The PSA has been active in the media since the announcement, calling on the NSW Government to review where they are seeking to get the “savings” from, and to stop running a protection racket for Senior Executives. You can follow the PSA Facebook page to view the press conference held last Friday by PSA General Secretary Stewart Little.

Early exit for TSSM’s
The announcement refers to “early exit” options for TSSM’s. However, it also states that some branches will begin consultation from as early as August (next week), whilst others will begin later in the year. In order to remove the inequity of some branches undergoing such processes before others, TfNSW should first put a call out to all TSSMs for their interest in an early exit, regardless of which branch they belong to.
Member meetings
While consultation on the plan to cut 950 positions has not yet begun, and specific designs have not been shared with the PSA, we will be holding meetings for members to discuss concerns and ask any questions you may have at this stage.
The meetings will be via Teams for all members to attend, however PSA Organisers will also be on-site at the locations below between 11:00 am – 1:30pm. There will be further meetings in coming weeks.
