Laundry Allowance Back pay for GA’s

The PSA is pleased to announce you should commence receiving your uniform allowance from June 2023. In addition, you will receive back pay for the time the allowance was not paid in the past.

In February 2023, the PSA wrote to the Department of Education (DoE) about its failure pay General Assistants their entitled Laundry Allowance. Your union also informed the Department that members are entitled to back pay.

The Laundry Allowance is a condition under the Crown Employees (Public Service Conditions of Employment Reviewed Award 2009) for employees whose duties require specialised or protective clothing.

The Award directs staff who receive a uniform or PPE as part of their role shall be paid the allowance for laundry expenses.

The oversight was first raised with the Department in the PSA/DoE Joint Consultative Committee on 17 October 2022.

The DoE will make retrospective payment to the beginning of the 2017 school year. This meets the six-year limitations period for taking action to recover arrears of income.

Lastly, the PSA advises members to seek professional advice on financial and taxation matters from accredited financial advisors. The PSA is unable to provide members with independent financial advice, nor should we seek confidential private information concerning your individual taxation and financial matters.
