PSA Timeline: 1950 – 1959

1959 At the Annual Conference, the membership voted for the first time to affiliate with the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU). Although the vote was defeated, membership voted to instruct the general secretary to report on the viability of affiliation with State associations. The PSA did affiliate with the ACTU in 1965.
*1958 In January female clerical officers gained 85 per cent of the male rate.
1957 The NSW Government legislates for six weeks’ paid maternity leave for permanent officers.
1955 The PSA campaigns with the Professional Officers Association and the Teachers Federation for public sector wage increases, holding mass rallies at Sydney Town Hall. The 1950s saw the PSA work increasingly with other unions on issues which unite the union movement as a whole.
1955 A government report recommends reviewing the status of some temporary employees, giving those eligible permanent roles.
1951 At the Annual Conference PSA membership votes to affiliate with the Labor Council (later named Unions NSW). The PSA was the only public sector union to affiliate with a State statutory body at this time.
1950 Australian women’s minimum wage set to 75 per cent of men’s.
1950 Membership hits 8430.
