LCAG Report Back on Meeting with Local Member for Wollongong Paul Scully - Public Service Association

LCAG Report Back on Meeting with Local Member for Wollongong Paul Scully

On 16 December a PSA/CPSU NSW delegation met with the Member of Parliament for the seat of Wollongong, Paul Scully.

The delegation discussed issues of importance with Mr Scully including the effects the unfair NSW public sector salary cap is having on public sector workers in our region and inevitably the break on wage growth that flows on to workers in the private sector.

During our discussions, Mr Scully confirmed he is committed to the removal of the public sector wages cap and importantly the reintroduction of an independent empire in the NSW Industrial Relations Commission. Mr Scully further noted the important contribution public sector wages has to the local economy.

The delegation also gave Mr Scully a rundown of the importance of Public Sector Jobs in the Region and how important public servants are to Wollongong.

Mr Scully is incredibly supportive of the work PSA/CPSU NSW members and noted the essential role Public Servants had in keeping the region going during the pandemic.

Mr Scully heard first hand about agencies including State Emergencies Services (SES), Service NSW, Department of Education ASTP, Housing NSW and TAFE NSW was very sympathetic to the difficult conditions many of our members work under, including chronic workload, under-resourcing and cuts to staff affecting the service provided to the community.

On this Mr Scully understood the need to keep agencies like the SES in Wollongong and that SES Staff and volunteers are extremely dedicated to their roles and need adequate staffing to best serve the public rather than the raft of cuts that has plagued the agency.

Follow Up Meeting

The delegation also noted they would like to meet with Mr Scully again to further discuss the issues.  Mr Scully noted he would be happy too.
