PSA notifies dispute over School Psychologists’ pay increase

Over the past few months, your union, the PSA, has been advocating for your pay and conditions with the Department of Education (DoE).

The PSA met with the DoE in May 2021 and asked for two matters to be progressed:

  • A 2.28 per cent pay rise for School Psychologists (to match that of School Counsellors) back-dated to 1 January 2021
  • Commencement of negotiations for a stand-alone Award for School Psychologists.

The Department informed the PSA that a response on these matters would be provided to your union as soon as possible.

On 20 July, the PSA sent the department a Letter of Notice that we are in dispute since we have not received a response to the matters raised and the pay rise is now well overdue. The PSA has required the Department to respond by COB Wednesday, 4 August 2021 and informed it that if we do not receive a satisfactory response, the PSA will seek the assistance of the Industrial Relations Commission (IRC) to progress the matter.

The IRC conciliates and arbitrates industrial disputes, sets conditions of employment and reasonable wages and salaries. The PSA has recourse to take such matters to the IRC when the parties don’t agree on how the matter should be resolved and are unable to reach a satisfactory outcome.

Members will be updated on this matter.

School Psychologists deserve a pay rise, and be assured, that your union, the PSA, will do everything in our power to ensure you get one from your employer.

If you have not already done so, complete the PSA Survey HERE by midday Friday 23 July. The results of this survey will inform us on the issues to address through Award negotiations.

Thank you for being a PSA member. Our members give us the strength to improve your pay and conditions. The more members we have, the more powerful we become. In anticipation of our future Award negotiations, it is more important than ever that more School Psychologists join the PSA.

Talk to your non-member School Psychologist colleagues about the work that the PSA is doing and encourage them to join their union online at www.psa.asn.au.
