Safe Staff Safe Kids Campaign Launch – 20 October

Safe Staff Safe Kids Campaign Launch - October 2020 (pdf version)

The Public service Association invites all child protection and community services workers to attend the launch, during Mental Health Month, of the Safe Staff Safe Kids Campaign.

Over the last 12 months the PSA has continually fought for members to have safe workplaces, manageable workloads and genuine access to their Award entitlements such as flex time and flexible work.

Your delegates and PSA staff have lobbied both the Department and the Minister to take your concerns seriously and meet their legislative responsibilities by providing a safe workplace for members.

PSA best practice mental health project

In early 2020 the PSA commissioned a research project to develop a best practice model for mental health and wellbeing specific to the context of child protection.

The project looked at the impacts of workplace violence such as threats and assaults, vicarious trauma and extreme workloads which can lead to psychological injuries affecting all workers in child protection.  This is clearly demonstrated by the irrefutable fact that, shockingly, the severity and incidence of psychological claims in the previously FACS part of the Department of Communities and Justice exceeds those in both Ambulance and Police.

The project took into account everyone working in child protection , including admin support, caseworkers, managers, casework specialists, psychologists, casework support officers and legal officers and comprehensively assessed the impacts of the work that you all do on mental health and wellbeing.

The model developed through this project forms the basis of our Safe Staff Safe Kids Campaign and encapsulates many of the issues raised directly with us by members across NSW.

Safe Staff Safe Kids Campaign: Understanding, Prevention + Protection, Support, Recovery

The Safe Staff Safe Kids Campaign calls on the NSW Government and the Department of Communities and Justice to implement systems and support that genuinely addresses the issues members face.

The PSA invites all child protection workers to attend the launch and find out more about the campaign to improve your working lives so that you can support vulnerable kids and families.
