Gender pay gap widens in NSW public sector over past decade – SMH 13/12/2021
General secretary of the Public Service Association union Stewart Little said the public sector should not be seeing a growing pay gap, as the biggest employer in the country with a female-dominated workforce.
“There is no doubt the surge in the pay gap is a direct result of the decision to only pay a 0.3 per cent increase last year, which disproportionately impacted women,” he said.
The PSA argues that gender pay gap will always remain as long as female-dominated sectors like disability, aged care and teachers are chronically undervalued.
In 2019, the union secured a 19 per cent pay increase for school support staff (94 per cent female) after a pay equity case found their work had been historically undervalued.
