Service NSW: PSA survey results - Public Service Association

Service NSW: PSA survey results

Thanks to all members who completed the PSA’s survey, it was a very good turnout from across Service NSW, below is a summary.

Forty-nine per cent of respondents report working UNPAID HOURS

The survey results showed that nearly half of respondents worked unpaid hours in the past 12 months.

Forty-nine per cent of respondents reported they had worked unpaid hours in the past 12 months. Of those who said they worked unpaid hours, 66.67 per cent worked fewer than 10 unpaid hours per month, 21.71 per cent worked 11-20 hours unpaid hours per month, 4.65 per cent worked 21-30 hours unpaid hours per month and 6.98 per cent worked more than 30 hours unpaid hours per month.

Do you think you’ve been underpaid?

This is of course a huge concern to the PSA, and to all Service NSW employees. The PSA advises all members not to work additional hours unless prior approval has been obtained. If you are you do work extra you must be paid as per the Service NSW (Salaries and Conditions) Employees Award 2016. If you feel pressured into working additional hours, please record any conversations and/or emails that you may have received that instruct you to work extra hours.

If you have worked unpaid hours, your union advises that you log the hours that you have worked, while demonstrating that you have not been paid. The PSA will assist and advise affected members further in relation to what recourse they may have.

Flexible Work

Nearly 58 per cent said they had applied for flexible working arrangements, with nearly 64 per cent reporting that their request was successful. Unfortunately, nearly 30 per cent stated their request was unsuccessful. Again this is an issue of concern to the PSA, and we would like to hear directly from any members about their unsuccessful flexible work application.

Of the members who reported, 57.89 per cent had applied for flexible working arrangements in the past 12 months. With 63.93 per cent reporting that their request was successful, 29.51 per cent were unsuccessful and 6.56 per cent were awaiting a response.

Job security

While 61.78 per cent of members felt secure in their employment, still a significant number – 22.51 per cent – felt insecure and 15.71 per cent were unsure. Of those that felt insecure, 9.78 per cent said it was because they were temporary, 42.39 per cent were concerned about future restructures and/or possible redundancies, nearly 20 per cent were concerned about the possibility of privatization and/or contracting out of services, another 27.17 per cent did not list reason as to why the felt insecure in their employment.
