PSA STOP WORK ACTION: STAND UP FOR SAFETY!
PSA STOP WORK ACTION – STAND UP FOR SAFETY – January 2019 (PDF version)
Stewart Little, the General Secretary of the Public Service Association of NSW, has authorised STOP WORK meetings at each Juvenile Justice Detention Centre in NSW.
The STOP WORK action will take place between 1:00-3:00pm on Wednesday, 9 January 2019.
Local PSA delegates will advise meeting locations at each centre.
The action, recommended by the PSA’s peak DJJ state delegates committee, follows the Department’s decision to end a moratorium on the transfer of A1(b) detainees and comes in response to the NSW Government’s continued failure to adequately address staff and offender safety, resourcing and the management of high risk young offenders.
Each STOP WORK meeting will be asked to endorse the following motion:
“Staff of the [INSERT Juvenile Justice Detention Centre] call on the NSW Government and Department of Juvenile Justice to urgently establish a specialist high risk unit(s), with appropriate staffing, facilities and rehabilitation programs to manage the states most violent and at risk young offenders. Community, staff and detainee safety can no longer be ignored. The state’s Juvenile Justice system is in crisis, and the government must act now.”
Lock down procedures will apply during the STOP WORK and all members on duty are directed to attend a meeting at their centre.
