Two members in need of help

On Tuesday, 1 August 2023, Senior Correctional Officer Wayne Davis and Correctional Officer Shane Myers were involved in a serious boating accident off Crescent Head on the NSW Mid North Coast. Both Wayne and Shane were thrown overboard where they sustained severe injuries from the boat and its propeller driving over them at speed. The five-metre vessel is still yet to be located.

The men were in the water for more than 90 minutes and swam with their severe injuries over 1km to shore at Back Beach, near Point Plomer. It was here they were found, and emergency services were alerted. They were treated by responding Lifeguards, NSW Ambulance, and the Westpac Helicopter Critical Care Team before being airlifted 280km away to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital.

Wayne suffered severe laceration injuries to his abdomen and other parts of his body. He has undergone two surgeries with skin grafting, with more surgeries, skin grafts and physiotherapy to come. Shane sustained two broken legs and substantial cuts. He has undergone three surgeries where metal pins and rods were placed in his legs and skin grafts were completed.  He also has surgeries and physiotherapy ahead. Both Wayne and Shane have long roads to recovery, both physically and mentally, following the traumatic boating accident.

Currently, it is estimated they will be unable to participate in any form of employment for at least 6-12 months. Both men are proud, family-orientated individuals who do not need the added concern of the impact that this will have on their families. Wayne and Shane are undergoing treatment for their severe injuries 280km and three hours away from their loving wives, children, grandchildren, family and friends.

The Davis and Myers families are proud, hardworking contributors to their local community and to NSW. They would never ask for help. However, it is well known that they would be first to assist anyone in need. It is for this reason that it is a priority that we ensure that we ease the growing financial burden to allow Wayne and Shane to focus on their recoveries with their loving families at their side.

We are asking you to help ease the extensive costs of medical and travel expenses, as well as the loss of income caused by this horrific accident to two highly regarded Correctional Officers and members of the PSA/POVB family.
